Lately there has been tons of talk about how some authors are pushing too hard when It comes to promoting their books. Frankly I don't mind re-tweeting a message ten times, but when it comes to telling me when, how and where to buy the book the line gets drawn. Also as a bookseller if someone tells me NOT to put their book out early because they don't want their numbers affected then they need to understand how a bookstore runs, because seriously that is RUDE!
Small Strict ON Sale tutorial follows..
one in ten authors actually get a strict on sale street date. This means that the publisher has paid for a promo for said author and they are going on a specific table endcap whatever..at a sale price. Then the book is held for the actual street date.
a soft landing means the book can be put out when it arrives in the store. Many publishers ship really early, and most stores will wait til that Monday.
Now one more note..if you go into a store on the release date and your book isn't out yet, it's likely for two reasons..your publisher shipped late..or it's sorted on to a cart and waiting to go out. Sometimes there are not enough shelvers to get everything out in a timely manner. Ask politely for it and if it's in the store a bookseller will usually get it.
Just as readers are important to a writers career so are booksellers..seriously we are the go between. Be nice.
My final word be glad you have a sale whenever it's purchased as long as it's done legally!
